China Again - When Will US Bovine Serum Enter the Market?

In an earlier post we reported about China adopting new BSE rules. The new rules created chances for reopening the Chinese market to imports of US sourced bovine serum. Other important prerequisites for importation of US bovine serum into China - an Agreement between FDA and AQSIQ on Safety of Food and Feed - is also in place.

In the past two months various US exporters have been hoping for the good news to come that imports are officially permitted. There has been however no further official notice from China AQSIQ that the border is open.

USDA provided helpful information on this matter: "While it is true that AQSIQ announced that the outright ban on bovine blood products from BSE infected areas was lifted, SPS requirements have yet to be negotiated. We have formally requested market access and are waiting for AQISQ to complete a risk assessment."

So basically the door is opening up but AQSIQ has to perform a risk assessment process first. Once completed the Chinese provinces will have to adopt the import procedures recommended by the AQSIQ headquarters in Beijing. When this is likely to happen depends on the priority level set by the Chinese authorities.
